Before the First VisitTo help your child prepare for his or her first visit you should focus on the positive aspects of the visit such as watching a movie, getting a new toothbrush, and meeting their new dentist. Explain to your child that going to the dentist is a sign that they are growing up and a check-up for your teeth keeps them strong and healthy. You can tell your child what to expect during their first visit. They will meet Dr. Borg and she will count their teeth. They will get their teeth brushed and have pictures taken of their teeth, when they are all done they get to go to our toy chest and pick out a new toy, a pencil and a sticker. Remember that if you are relaxed and at ease your child will most likely be relaxed and comfortable as well. If you show signs of being anxious or worried your child will feel your anxiety which could have a negative impact on their first experience. Please do not tell your child that going to the dentist "will not hurt". It is best to not even put the word "hurt" in their mind. Please avoid using words like needle, shot, pull, or any words that may suggest unpleasantness. Our staff is trained to explain each of our procedures in "child friendly" terms they can understand before we perform them. If your child is afraid, be positive and reassuring. If we all work together and stay positive, chances are your child's first experience will be an enjoyable one. First VisitOur caring staff will review your child's health history form. You and your child will be introduced to our dental team. You are always welcome to accompany your child into the treatment area. This will allow you to see the staff in action and it will allow you the opportunity to discuss any concerns with Dr. Borg. Your child will receive a cleaning, exam, x-rays, and a fluoride treatment. Additional services will be scheduled for a future visit. |
